New shed

New shed

Sorry for our little hiatus. Ripple Craft have been busy building a new shed. Check out the shed! Wow all that room for more toys (opps  machines). Colm cannot wait to have everything moved in and finished. As always, it is a work in progress. Of course, when you build it yourself it takes much longer than what you think. But it is happening. We just need to place the ridge cap, windows and door on. We will keep you posted with more updates.

Bespoke Messmate Oval Table

Bespoke Messmate Oval Table

Jessica and Daniel spoke to us, late last year in relation to some ideas they had for a bespoke dining room table. After completing the build of their new house they touched base again with us to work out how we could handcraft an oval table with metal legs.

Jessica and Daniel wanted to use local recycled Messmate timber, and we were able to source this recycled timber from an old house in Melbourne after it was demolished, it was used as roof trusses. The Messmate we found had a lovely rich brown/peachy colour to it full of nail holes and with some of the typical gum vain character you would expect.

After numerous mathematical calculations to ensure the table would have a final visually appealing oval shape, whilst at the same time making sure all diners had ample room to enjoy their meal, Colm began work on the table.

After clamping and gluing the table top, work began on the roughing out of the oval shape, filling in small old nail holes and sanding the table top to bring out the grain. Colm then sealed the table with oil/wax to ensure a beautiful finish was created.

Colm used 75mm box steel in the fabrication of the legs, again more his finest high school math was required, trigonometry this time to get the correct angle for the legs, ensuring each dining guest would be comfortable sitting around the table. The legs were welded, and cleaned back for a smooth finish. Completed by powder coating in a mat black colour.

Due to the weight of the table top around 120kg, the table legs and top are designed to come apart using countersunk bolts under the table top for easier transportation.

New side tables on show this weekend

New side tables on show this weekend

On display this weekend at the Violet Town Market, Colm will have some new side tables he has designed and made. The steel frame creates an industrial look that is softened with the use of recycled and reclaimed timber, finished off with a piece of glass for a modern twist.

The tables have a 450mm x 470mm timber top so they are an ideal size for a coffee table or side table. You can pop down and see them at the Violet Town Market Saturday 9 April from 8.30 – 1.00pm for more information on the market visit http://www.violettown.org.au/market

Christmas presents

Christmas presents

Colm has been super busy in his workshop. Making a heap of stools, reindeers and cheese platters just to name a few.

The most recent product Colm has finished was a cheese/antipasto platter for a local client. The platter is made from beautiful reclaimed red gum timber. Colm found this piece of timber locally, under a large pile of wooden planks, he dusted it off, put it though his planer thicknesser to discover under the dirt a lovely piece of red gum with amazing grain. Colm then worked his magic joining the timber together, fashioning a solid steel ring and handles creating the finnished platter you now see.
